Background: During the 1800s, the U.S. had began it's westward expansion. Thousands of people were moving west using the trail know as the Oregon Trail that was about 2,000 miles long. The trail began in Independence, Missouri and ended in Oregon city, near Portland, Oregon. Several emigrants gathered along the Missouri River, waiting for just the right time to start their way to the west. To prepare for this journey, planning was needed because the journey was long and dangerous. Such of the things that the emigrants encountered that was a problem along the way was the Indians, the accidental deaths through drowning, and diseases.
